Class War in America

Most people in Politics and Government seems to agree that in America there are economic classes, as your comments to last week's post attest.

In The Iron Heel, Ernest says that these economic classes have distinctly different interests -- that means the wealthy man cannot understand or fairly represent the poor man's interest. Each economic class must have their own representatives in Congress who will fight for their class interests.

Bernie Sanders, a Senator from Vermont, is neither a member of the Democrats nor Republicans -- he is an Independent. He is the only US Senator to describe himself as a "socialist." Watch this short video of Bernie Sanders on the floor of Congress. He argues that there is a class war being waged in America -- and the wealthy class is winning against the poor:

Jimmy Hoffa, the president of the Teamsters union, also says there is a class war happening. Hoffa means that unions are having their legal ability to collectively organize and negotiate for better pay and benefits taken away. For examples, a newspaper near my hometown reported that local teachers have had their rights to collectively bargain taken away.

Instead of a war against the poor, US Republican Senator Paul Ryan says that President Obama is waging a class war against the wealthy by trying to increase taxes on those that make more than one million dollars per year.

What do you think? Do you see yourself as a member of any particular class? Do the different economic classes have different interests? Or, do the capitalist and the worker have exactly the same interests? Or maybe the capitalist and the worker share some interests, but not all? And, even more importantly, is there a class war happening in America right now? If you think so, which class do you think is winning and which class is loosing?

  1. I do beleive there are seperate classes in America. Two classes. The super rich and the getting by. Obama is implementing what is called "the Buffet tax" it wont pass through congress because they protect the rich. Being rich is anyone who can put money in a congresspersons pocket. Like the oil companies. You know that the oil companies made 300 billion in profit alone last quarter. So in a three month time period the oil companies made 300 million in profit. thats money they made after they paid eveything they needed to pay that quarter. Then there is the people who have jobs and struggle to survive. job means Just Over Broke. We are the ones who suffer and struggle. Im am definatly one of the broke people. They say money cant buy ou happiness....Try living without it. Chad Watson

  2. yes I do believe that there are three classes. the upper class, middle class, and lower class. There is also different levels of classes in those classes. The gap between the super rich and the poor is becoming too large. I would put me and my family in the middle class. No one wants socialism at the same time. My dad shouldn't have to pay 40% of his paycheck, thats a tad ridiculous. I would say 25%.

  3. Everyone has social class by the way they act in public the clothes they wear the way they act. People who have money act more rude and act like they are better than you. But I do notice one big difference, members of the wealthy class are unhappy with their lives because they cant achieve happiness. I see struggling poor families fighting to keep the house and they are much more happier than the wealthy class. the capitalist and worker have the same interest make their lives happier and make some money. Lastly I see a social war I see many Americans struggle and fight for a job. This is an interesting fact from the video 1980 to 2000 80 percent of new income goes to the top 1 percent that percent blows my mind. More and more income leads to more power. Greedy sons of bitches.

  5. I think the people making more than $1 million a year should be taxed more. It's ridiculous that people of lower classes get screwed when it comes to taxes and such but yet everyone who makes that much money continues to keep that money and we're all left to live paycheck to paycheck.

  6. I think the word "war", is a bit much. Obviously, the classes are going to disagree. I don't completely know what class I identify with. I work two jobs which comes out to about 47 hours per week, and go to school full time. I have my own little apartment. I do not feel this by any means makes me wealthy though. I'm not making a whole lot of money, but I'm making enough to pay the bills and be happy. I feel when people say lower-class it's all about broke depressed people. I'm perfectly content with what I make(noone would ever mind making more ). No class will win the "war". The only way this could happen is if rich people pay all the taxes and the lower class doesn't - lower class wins. This goes both way. None of these situations will ever happen.

  7. I see myself as part of that small middle class that is disappearing. The wealthy and working class have very different opinions. As Ernest said, the wealthy cannot represent the lower class because they don't know what its like to be in the lower class. The wealthy aim at getting more wealth while the lower class struggles to get by. The upper class doesn't have to work nearly as hard to make much more money. I do think there is class war going on right now. The rich are deffinatley winning right now but with one quick uprising by the poor, they could win. There are so many more in the poor class that the rich would be forced to do what the poor demanded. I don't see this playing out but if it did, America would never be the same.

  8. I see myself in the middle class. And I do think that there is different classes in America. I think that there is a war between the lower and the upper class Americans. The upper class Americans are trying to get raises on the lower classes taxes, when they are most likely struggling enough as it is to pay the bills.

  9. I see my family and I in the middle class. The gap between this top 1% and the middle class is increasing more and more each year and is absurd. Between 1980-2005 80% of the countries income went to that top 1%. How is that fair? The government needs to step up and get our country out of this recession.

  10. There definitly are classes in America. I don't know what the standards are for each class, but I do know my family and I are not homeless and we are content with what we have. Granted everyone in my family works, my parents work 40+ hours each and my sister and I work between 20-30 hours a week each. We are all ok with this because we were all, including my parents, raised to believe that nothing will be handed to you. Prof. Stump has been talking about "pulling yourself up by your boots straps" and how it doesn't really happen for most people, but personally my family has. Neither of my parents have inherited a damn thing from family, and neither have I or my sister. I bought a car with MY money and I pay for my college tuition with MY money, not my parent's or grandparents' or anyone elses. Sometimes I wonder if maybe its not how much taxes you pay or what you make that matter, but if its what the people do with the money they do get? I mean if you can't afford to make payments on a 2010 Camaro then don't try to, instead try for the 2001 Corrolla. It serves the same purpose.

  11. I believe that in the US there are 3 different classes; upper, middle, and lower. However, the gap between them is growing larger and larger. I do agree with Chris that rich people "act" like they're better than others but shouldn't they. Instead of being a deadbeat waiting to get their next fix, the rich are out working.

  12. I agree with Heather. I think the lower class shouldn't have to have higher taxes if they don't make that much to begin with. That just sets them up to have money problems. The people making a lot more money should be the ones with the higher taxes. If they have the money to buy new cars, and all these houses; they can afford higher taxes.

  13. I believe that there are three classes within society the wealthy, middle, and poor class. I agree with what heather is saying in that the lower class shouldnt have to have higher taxes, as as for the class war I believe that to some extent the government pitties the working class against corporations and the rich. Secondly, Ive recently read in an article that, "Much the same sort of analysis applies to the Republican claims that taxing corporations and rich people takes money that would otherwise be invested in business growth and thus create jobs." With that being said I agree with what Kayla Myers has said above the people making the most money should be the ones with higher taxes, if they have the money to buy new cars, they can obviously afford to pay higher taxes, however this is only fair to a certain extent, if the upper wealthy class works hard for their money then they are entitled to the luxuries of a new house or new car, and if the poor are just lazy and choose to live that way, then they are too entitled to make do with what they have. I see my family and I in the middle class, both my parents work full time and my dad is also retired from another job and gets a check at the end of the month for that job on top of his bi weekly salary from his new job, we are well off but we are a non-materialistic family in the sense that we have what is nescessary and not over the top outrageous in order to save money to go on vacations or to pay for tuition rather than have loans. I feel that in America today the wealthy are winning and the poor are suffering, It will always be this way especially now when the stocks are falling and the recession hits.

  15. I completely agree with Brendan. The only way to keep taxing "fair" in the eyes of everybody is to impose a flat tax. A specific percentage of income that applies to every individual and corporation in the United States regardless of profits and income. A reasonable percentage would be between 10% and 15%. This would appeal to individuals in the lower class, because the percentage would leave them with enough money to get by, and the corporations would feel less threatened by the government.

  16. I believe the gap between the rich and poor is growing in America everyday. The gap is not only growing but so are the rich populations bank accounts as the poor class is foreclosing on homes and going bankrupt. As people loose their homes people who do have money are buying up homes for close to nothing.
I do believe if you make more you should have to pay more taxes. To the "flat rate idea" is it fair that we pay the same amount of taxes as Oprah or a NFL star? I dont think so. And to say you work harder for your money is not always true..Look at Paris Hilton?

There is perks of having money like being able to get what you want, and being able to afford nice things. 20. I think no matter what class you are in, one large common goal is shared. This is that everyone wants a better life and more money. This can be the thought of a starving homeless person or a billionaire. Americans (overall) are fairly greedy and selfish when it comes to money. It comes down to if that person NEEDS to be selfish or greedy. If there are going to be changes in the classes, the extremes on each end need to be moved closer together.

  21. There are definitely classes in American and they are in a war. The poor and middle classes are constantly fighting the upper class. Different classes definitely have different interests. The family in the poor class worries about what they will eat for dinner and gets excited when they are financially able to go out as a family to the movies. A family who is considered upper class may worry with what new car they purchase and rarely get excited about things they consider normal (parties, vacations). I think that the classes cannot relate to one another because there is such a large gap. It is just ridiculous that the gap continues to grow between the poor and upper class. I think that the middle class is so small that it will be non-existent very shortly if things don’t change. The capitalist are ruining the financial state of our economy and this seems to be a topic that is not discussed as much as it should be. And as stated in class that they majority of politicians are making a foolish amount of income—do they really need to be paid t hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars to “relate” to the working class—when they in reality cannot relate at all. The war of classes in America is reaching a point where something needs to be done or the top 1% will own and control everything in the near future. There is a war and the upper class is winning and increasing their income and power daily.

  22. I know that there are different classes in america. In every society there is going to be someone making more than another person. I have a different view on these matters though because my family and I are "capitalists". I believe that the capitalist and the worker should both share the same interest and goal. To make money. From my point of view, there is a line. On that line is where the owner and the worker is making the best income possible. If the worker has too much control then the owner fails and the whole company goes under. If the owner has too much control, then the workers get abused and the company also goes under. Of course some capitalists don't empower their workers to be the best they can be and hopefully, eventually go on to start their own enterprises too. Yes class war is happening, but it is entirely unnecessary.

  24. There are definitely classes in America and there is indeed a struggle between them. I, as part of the middle class, believe that the capitalists are bringing upon a war. All classes try to reach the same goal, to earn more money and climb the social ladder. As the statistics show, the top 1% is climbing, yet everyone else is falling. This war has been going on for decades, but it is now becoming more prevalent. Sooner rather than later the capitalists will earn 40 or maybe even 50% of all income. Where will that leave everyone else? How will America survive is anyone who is not rich, is poor. Wages are dwindling down by the second and eventually it will not be enough income to support an individual, let alone an entire family.

I think that would bridge the gap, even just a little. And maybe then there wouldn't be such a dispute. We're not all that different if you look past wealth, outer appearences, and attitude. Every class strives for the same thing, and thats money. Money is what brings everyone together and tears us all a part. I don't blame any particular group of people for whats going on. Rich people act the way they do to keep their wealth and poor people act in a means to gain some wealth. It's a fact of life. Regardless, the government needs to find a way to bridge the gap.

  32. There are different classes of people in the US: the rich, middle class, and then the poor (which I believe are better off than a long time ago, but the economy doesn't help the little progress that's been made). If you make over a certain amount a year I believe you should be taxed more because you have more to give back. I don't believe there should be equal taxing because if you tax for example, 30% on everyone the poor would be worse off and same for some of the middle class. The rich on the other hand would be fine regardless. I don't think were in the midst of a class war because not enough people are speaking out against the capitalists to cause a commotion of that degree. Now we all share similar interests but not quite the same. We all want to gain more money to buy or do the things we want and need to. But the rich keep more and more of the wealth for themselves WHILE gaining more. The rest of us use the money for things like I mentioned before and then try to save some for that time when our job or life might get turned upside down. Generally the rich don't have that worry so they can do more of what they want with their money.

  38. There will always be unequal distribution of wealth among all countries in any political system. One thing that people could make to decrease the financial gap between people is to make more jobs and do more businesses that would help people. If people are willing to do well in their life then they would surely find a way to do so. It's not the rich's people fault that people are poor but rather the greedy people who are gaming to system to their own benefit. I find it quite stereotypical that the rich are regarded as greedy and the poor people are lazy since not all people are like that.

What the government should focus are the laws that would help business starters to grow and compete with the big corporations with equal opportunity so these corporations wouldn't be able to monopolize and be restrictive towards other growing businesses. And if we really want equality, it is more beneficial for the government to provide equal opportunities in taxing as it doesn't discriminate people based on what they earn.

It is both the interest of the rich and poor to earn more than what they have. To give the poor the equal opportunity as the rich, the government should impose laws that would protect the poor from being crushed by these large corporations. however due to having greedy people in position, it prevents the poor to grow financially by themselves.

The lower class has the power to make their social status better. but making raging war to the rich people isn't necessarily the solution.

It's impossible to think otherwise when I look around or watch the news. And the insanely wealthy have all the power in the country because their investments fuel our local economy. My father worked at an aluminum plant as a plant foreman for 25 years. A major investor decided he would be making more money if the plant went overseas the China. Three weeks later my father was out of a job and it took him 3 years to find another one. With things like that going on, it's hard to have faith in a class system. Also with the way America shuns our homeless, it's ridiculous to expect them to be able to rise above their station. We over them little to no help getting rebuilding their lives. It's not so much a class war, but every class hates the other. The insanely wealthy have forgotten about the other two classes because they aren't worth their time, the scraping by hate the wealthy for this and are scared of the homeless because they don't what to become that so they ignore it, and the homeless are hateful for the lack of assistance or even kindness they are shown

They are the ones gaining money in our countries mini resession, and I feel that's a bit rediculous, the wealth should be equally distributed throughout the class ladder, but we still should have a class system in America.

  45. I believe that there are defiantly different classes in America. I would classify myself as middle class, but then again that is what everyone wants to claim. So am I really middle class? But I do believe it is completely wrong that the poor are getting poorer and the wealthy are getting wealthier...We need to step up and put a stop to it. But no one believes they can do that. So therefore we are going to settle with just becoming poorer??...We need a system that is going to equal the wealth out.

  46. There are 3 major classes in the U.S today. Although the middle class is starting to work its way down to the working class due to the lack of jobs and people losing their jobs. The rich have enough money to support basically every poor person in the United States to an extent. Socialist countries like Sweden and Norway have a policy that no one is homeless. Many people might argue that the rich worked for their money and do not have an obligation to give it up. Cooperation of classes and people in the class is what will bring this nation together. The United States needs to take notes from countries in Europe for policies. I also believe that if a person has a problem with current policies they need to step up and say something.

  47. I believe that the worker and the capitalist have different beliefs. I consider myself a member of the middle class but don't look down on other classes. I think everyone should be taxed equally.

  48. There is without a doubt different classes in the US and I would say I'm a part of the middle class. The interests of people that make more money not only live different lives but do not know anything about the lower classes. I wouldn't say there is a class war though because I dont think the upper class does anything to hinder the lower class. Anyone can go and get a better education and improve your own life and work your way up. Thats what our country was founded on you just have to work for it.

  49. I also believe the people making more than $1 million a year should be taxed more. It's doesn't make sense to me that people of lower classes get screwed over when it comes to paying taxes and such, but the people who make that much money continue to keep it and pay for things such as nice cars, higher schooling for their children and were barely making ends meet with working two jobs and living paycheck to paycheck.

  50. As I’ve stated in the last post, I believe there are three different classes in America which are the upper, middle, and the poor. I consider myself to be part of the middle class. I think that the capitalist and the workers share similar interest but definitely not all of them. I feel that there is a class war and it is occurring between the upper class and the poor. I feel that the wealthy people are winning.

  51. Everyone is part of one of three different classes. I believe that I'm part of the working/lower class. I think that capitalists and workers share very little interests. There is definitely a class war happening right now between upper and working class. Due to the upper class's immense wealth they are winning out against those in the working class.

  53. I also agree that America consists of three major classes: The upper, middle, and lower. I consider myself a part of the middle class and I feel like there is competition between classes. It seems as if the upper class is not only against the poor people of America, but also of the hard working middle class as well. With all the power, wealth, and prestige that the upper class has, they always seem to want more. They do everything in their power to get our hard earn money and in today's society it seems as if they are getting by with it. Taxing the people who more that make over 1 million dollars a year would be a good idea, but will it be good enough to stop all the scandalous actions that most upper class businessmen do?

  54. I would put myself in the middle class. My family they live in a suburban home in virginia so I would consider to be a middle class. I feel the worker and the captalist do not see eye to eye, and that people these days are not happy about going to work every day (especially monday!!!). I also feel that there is a class war going on in America because around where I live people are dropping out of the middle class left and right and are not happy with it at all. I feel something does need to change but it is how to do is the hard question. How will we do it? I am not sure, and I am not sure if there is a right or wrong answer. All I can do is do the best I can help other people and survive myself.

  55. I do believe there are social classes in the US, and I would classify my family as middle class. Upper and lower classes definitely have different interests. I say this because they live such different lives, there's no way they could have all of the same interests. Might they have some of the same interests? I think so. I think there is a class war going on in the United States today, and it has a lot to do with the economy and people losing their jobs. It's not that there isn't work out there for them to do, but the jobs that are available are not suitable for people supporting families. Especially when they're used to living off of a much larger income. With that being said, I would have to say the Capitalist class is winning.

  56. Their is a class war going on in America, but its one sided. No one from the working class has been in power for so long, that it would surprise everybody if someone from the middle or lower class got elected to congress.

  57. ok since my first comment seems to have disappeared I will post again!

I love Bernie Sanders! I have been following him for years!

I do believe he is right, there are classes in America and there is a struggle between them. (The word "war" may be a bit dramatic.) I personally belong to the working class and so does my family. The difference between the capitalists and the working class is each class has different perspective and expectations from their government and life in general. The struggle between the two is over which class the government caters to more.

Is there a winner? Not really but of course the people with the money have the power.

  58. My family is not the best financially right now. My dad is currently unemployed and my mom is having a hard time getting income. Having a flat tax makes sense because the rich can help the economy more by paying more taxes. Why should someone with very little money and someone with a lot of money pay the same taxes?

  59. I consider myself part of the middle class and with that, I believe that the middle class is losing or suffering in the class battle. I saw recently on an online newspaper that a Congressman or some kind of political leader was trying to increase taxes for the middle class. Our country is so unbalanced and I believe it's obvious.

  60. Before our country really began to decline economically, there was typically three classes: upper, middle and lower. Now, there is a distinct two classes. I would consider myself middle class. We are struggling and it is evident that we are viewed as the lower class. The class battle is on going and things need to be done to solve such a problem. Until then, our downward spiral will never end.
